Quakewold TF 2Fort
The Game That Started It All, QWTF
Up until when QWTF was released, the game of the day had been Quakeworld Free For All and Death Match. There was only one class and that was behind a rocket launcher blasting anything that moved. Sure, there was clan style death match. But it was basically the same type of game play as free for all. Instead of of shooting anything that moved, you just shot the other team.
There was Capture the Flag, but it was not much different from Death Match. There were the same old two teams, but this time they were fighting over a couple of flags.
And then there was Quakeworld Team Fortresss. This modification had different classes, it had different weapons, it had defensive and offensive teams, it had toys like sentry guns – what more could you want?

In your typical Free for All or Death Match game, players respawned at random locations around the map. QWTF changed that. No longer did players have to figure out where they were at, where was the armor and rocket launcher. Instead, we got a “respawn ” room. It was supposed to be a safe place for for players to start the game or respawn.

Something else that QWTF brought into the game – wide open, bright areas. A lot of the maps in Quake 1 are dark, rustic and almost medieval looking. Even though these new maps were bright, a lot of them held onto the medieval, rock, brick and wood appearance.

Even though the yard between the 2 bases was bright and easy to see, the inside of the bases reverted back to the dark and full of shadows look. On a side note, notice how big the ramp room looks compared to the current Team Fortress Classic, Fortress Forever and Team Fortress 2 ramp room.

On top of all of the new toys, weapons, character classes and maps, then there was the Capture the Flag aspect. CTF added a reason to play the game besides just to frag the enemy. While some players played just to run up the frag count, others played just to capture the flag. The different playing styles only added to the fun of the game.
Notice how big the flag room was in Quakeworld Team Fortress 2Fort compared to todays versions.
