The Almighty NoobTube

Published by Kevin under Left 4 Dead

Is the auto shotty in left 4 dead really a noobtube? In my opinion, yes it is.

While in a public game last night I noticed something. All of the players on my team were over the age of 30. One guy was 44, another one 31, I’am 41, and I think the last player was in his late 30s – all of us were using the assualt rifle.

Maybe its because we were all precision shooters instead of spray and prayers? Or maybe because the assualt rifle is a better team weapon, where you can make more accurate shots without having to hit your team members? Maybe it was because of our experience with online games?

Except for Doom, Half-Life and Half-Life 2, I can not think of another game that makes wide use of a shotgun like what Left 4 Dead does. Fortress Forever has a shotgun, but its mostly a secondary weapon. Quake and Quake 2 have shotguns, Quake Live has a shotgun, but they are mostly used with quad damage for maximum effect.

It seems that left 4 dead is the only game that I can think of where the players use a shotgun for their primary weapons. Most players opt for a rifle, or something that puts the bullet where you point the weapon, instead of just pointing and hoping you hit the target – which is also known as “spray and pray”. Meaning you spray an area with buckshot and pray you hit something.

Diaspora, a game reborn

Published by Kevin under All Other Games

Diaspora, a free strategic space mmorpg, has recently been born again. The original game and its clones, which lasted from as early as 1996 and went on until late 2001, at its peak boasted over 70,000 players out of several countries. Many people like myself played the original only to find its sudden end a great loss to the space trading and fighting mmorpg genre. Though extensively overhauled and with many new additions, the new Project Diaspora (or pDiaspora) is gaining momentum again as many previous and new players rediscover the joys of space trading, building up guilds, fighting deadly space battles, and interacting with a living breathing universe. Even though it’s still free to play, there is an activation option that allows you to unlock bigger, deadlier ships and reach further into the depths of the Diaspora universe. For this nominal charge of $5 USD, you also receive an additional 200 experience points and 2 million Diaspora Credits (DC), in which to help advance your character. Don’t let the activation fee put you off of this game however, as it is still enjoyable without it.

Whether you’re out to seek your fortune as a space trader carrying goods from one planet to the next, buying at the lowest prices and selling at the highest, or a pirate targeting such ships as they fly along the trading lanes, or even joining the militia to battle the pirate guilds. Your future lays within your imagination. The game currently boasts over nine different ship types. Each type further breaking down into eight classes. From flying small, sleek, weakly armed, but fast Seekers, to the spacious cargo and freighter vessels, or the massive player hunter Destroyers and Bohemoths, there is a ship to meet all a player’s needs and gaming styles.

Team Fortress 2 Development Phases

Published by Kevin under Team Fortress 2

Team Fortress 2 started development somewhere around 1999 shortly after the release of Team Fortress Classic. Short video clips and screen shots were being released by Valve software, and just months before the game was “supposed” to be released, everything went quiet.

Finally, about 9 years after development started, TF2 was released in October of 2007.

This video shows some of the phases that TF2 went through in its development.

Another meet the pyro video

Published by Kevin under Team Fortress 2

Yet another pretty nice Team Fortress 2 pyro video.

Thanks to TEAMROOMBA for posting this video on youtube.

The problem is, TF2 is not really a Team Fortress game, its more of a role playing, first person shooter game, that has traces of Team Fortress in it. But the traces are mostly in name alone.  Its not TEAMROOMBAs fault that the people at Valve Software slaughtered the name of “Team Fortress”.  But it is their fault for falling for a game that does not hold true to what TF is all about.

If you want to experience a real Team fortress game, go play Fortress Forever.

The problem is, most of the people that play TF2 are noobs to the Team Fortress community.  Watch this video about even Hitler hates TF2 to get a feel for what the old school community thinks.

The classes are overly balanced, no grenades, special unlockable weapons like in a role playing game,,, the list goes on and on.

Evolution on the sentry gun in Team Fortress

This video covers the evolution of the sentry gun in Team Fortress.

Quake Team Fortress – While filming the footage for the video, I could not find a Quakeworld Team Fortress server that was running the original skin, so this one had to do. The original QWTF sentry gun had a brown looking skin and did not look anything like that black one. Out of all of the team fortress versions, the QWTF sentry gun was probably the most lethal.

Team Fortress Classic – Was easy to build and upgrade, but did not seem to be ask lethal as the QWTF version. The TFC sentry gun can be rotated right and left, but not up or down.

Fortress Forever – Is maybe the most fun version and maybe has the best design. This thing is small, can be built just about anywhere, and can be aimed exactly where the engineer wants it.  When a cloaked spy gets close to this sentry gun, it starts beeping.  That way a cloaked spy is not going to sneak up on the engineer and his gun.

Team Fortress 2 – Due to the cloaking ability of the spy and the sapper, this sentry gun is on the weak side. Its a good gun, but doe to the over balancing of the classes, its almost useless against a good spy.
