Left 4 Dead
If you play Left 4 Dead, you should know there is a lot of anger in the community about the quick release of Left 4 Dead 2. A lot of players do not realize what Valve is doing, or “why” their doing it. All of this has been explained before. But for those of you that missed it, lets do a review.
Valve said a long time ago that they were no longer going to release large, iconic games like Half-Life 1.
A little History:
When Half-Life 1 was released, it was an epic, ground breaking game that forever changed the gaming industry. The game was HUGE by the standards that were in pace at the time. You could take Quake, which was the game of the day, and play through it in 6 – 8 hours. Quake II might take 18 – 24 hours – depending on how fast the player moved and how well they knew the maps. There were a lot of things in Quake II that were supposed to slow the player down, like finding a switch, or finding a key.
When Half-Life 2 was released, it seemed shorter then HL1. HL2 is a fun game with lots of detail. But it just seemed to be missing the “slow down and explorer” factor that HL1 had.
If you take a look at HL2 – Episodes 1 and 2 and compare them to the expansions for HL1 – Opposing Force and Blue Shift. In my opinion, HL2 – Episodes 1 and 2 are a lot shorter then the expansions released almost 10 years ago.
Other games by Valve:
It would be about like releasing Team Fortress 2. And when a bunch of new maps are released, Valve just rebrands the product and sells it again with some new character models and the new maps. Would that really be fair to TF2 players? In my opinion, no, that would not be fair to the tf2 community. But for some reason its supposed to be ok for the left 4 dead community?
How about Counter-Strike? Would it be ok for Valve to release some new maps, new models, rebrand the product and sell it again? For some reason I dont think the counter-strike players would like that very much.
Lets say that with the release of Counter-Strike:Source there were only 4 maps included with the game. Valve decides their going to release a series of maps based around New Orleans. CS:S is rebranded CS:S-2, some new character model are introduced, some new weapons are introduced and the product is sold for full price. But nothing “new” was really added to the game. It’s not like a whole new game engine was brought in – like what happened with Counter-Strike and Counter-Strike:Source.
