New games VS old games

Published by Kevin under All Other Games

Over the past 15 years (1995 – 2010), pc gaming sure has changed a lot.  As I look back, I also realize I miss some of those old games and the fan made modifications from the 1990s.  That time era was for games such doom, quake, diablo, diablo II, quake II, quakeworld, quakeworld  team fortress, capture the flag, half-life,,,,, you know, the epic kind of games.

In todays gaming market, rarely do I see a modification that gets the attention like what capture the flag, rune quake, quake world and rocket arena did. Its as if the fan made modifications get very little attention. And thats really sad, because modifications like Fortress Forever are truly great games.

I miss the days when games actually worked when they were released. Take left 4 dead 2 for example – it suffered from crashing to desktop bugs for 2 weeks after it was released.

Take a look at the quake series – Quake all the way to Quake 4:

Quake – no story plot, but still a great game.  One of the first games to feature atmosphere sounds and moving clouds.

Quake II – no atomosphere sounds, no moving clouds,,, it was like Quake II went backwards in time.

Quake III – no single player story plot, no story plot at all except deathmatch.

Quake 4 – 1/2 a story plot and a poor quality game.

Team Fortress 2 Development Phases

Published by Kevin under Team Fortress 2

Team Fortress 2 started development somewhere around 1999 shortly after the release of Team Fortress Classic. Short video clips and screen shots were being released by Valve software, and just months before the game was “supposed” to be released, everything went quiet.

Finally, about 9 years after development started, TF2 was released in October of 2007.

This video shows some of the phases that TF2 went through in its development.

Evolution on the sentry gun in Team Fortress

This video covers the evolution of the sentry gun in Team Fortress.

Quake Team Fortress – While filming the footage for the video, I could not find a Quakeworld Team Fortress server that was running the original skin, so this one had to do. The original QWTF sentry gun had a brown looking skin and did not look anything like that black one. Out of all of the team fortress versions, the QWTF sentry gun was probably the most lethal.

Team Fortress Classic – Was easy to build and upgrade, but did not seem to be ask lethal as the QWTF version. The TFC sentry gun can be rotated right and left, but not up or down.

Fortress Forever – Is maybe the most fun version and maybe has the best design. This thing is small, can be built just about anywhere, and can be aimed exactly where the engineer wants it.  When a cloaked spy gets close to this sentry gun, it starts beeping.  That way a cloaked spy is not going to sneak up on the engineer and his gun.

Team Fortress 2 – Due to the cloaking ability of the spy and the sapper, this sentry gun is on the weak side. Its a good gun, but doe to the over balancing of the classes, its almost useless against a good spy.

Hitlers opinion on Team Fortress 2

Published by Kevin under Team Fortress 2

This video about Team Fortress 2 reflects what a lot of old school players have been saying for a long time. TF2 has moved away from what a real Team Fortress game is supposed to be about.  The characters are overly balanced, the game looks like a cartoon, and some people say its turning into a role playing game because of the unlockable weapons.

The discontent about TF2 is something that the community wants to keep hidden – for whatever reason. This is just my opinion, but I think that a lot of TF2 fans just go along with the herd mentality. That TF2 was made by Valve, so it “has” to be good. And that is a load of crap.  Just because a product is made by a certain company does not “magically” make it great, or even good.

When TF2 was released, a lot of people that bought it had never played a Team Fortress game before. So they think that TF2 is a “real” Team Fortress game. Well guys – its not.  Even though those people might have been playing TF2 for a long time, their still Team Fortress Noobs.

How can someone with no experience on a topic offer an opinion on it?  They can’t.  To offer a real opinion on a topic, you need some kind of experience and knowledge.

About the Author of this post:

Kevin has been playing online multi-player games since the mid 1990s with the release of Quake and Quakeworld.  When Quakeworld Team Fortress (QWTF) was released, a buddy of Kevins (a player by the name of Acid Breath) told him about it.  That was in late 1996.  From 1996 – 2009 Kevin has played QWTF, TFC, Fortress Forever and TF2.  So that is 13 years experience with 4 different versions of Team Fortress.

Quakeworld Team Fortress Maps and Files

Published by Kevin under Quakeworld Team Fortress

We here at Elite Gamers believe in supporting the classics.  And because of this, a Quakeworld Team Fortress section has been added to our files section. Some of the files include classic maps such as 2Fort5, 2Fort32, Hunted and several others.

Quakeworld Team Fortress (QWTF) was the first team fortress game, and the one that started it all.  Without QWTF, its doubtful we would have Team Fortress Classic, Fortress Forever and Team Fortress 2.  It was Quake and was a free addon.  When QWTF was released, it took the Quake community by storm.  At that time there were just a couple of multiplayer games on the market and Quake was the only real first person shooter multiplayer game.

Games like QWTF must never be forgotten.  If they are, part of our gaming history is forgotten.  Its not enough to say that Fortress Forever is one of the best Team Fortress games on the market today.  We should be able to look back and be able see what to took to make Fortress Forever a great game.

To make sure that our gaming history is not forgotten, new files will be added on a regular basis.  So check back often for updates.

Now then, go visit the Team Fortress Forum.

Team Fortess Classic Forever Video

Published by Kevin under Team Fortress Classic

Team Fortress Classic – also known as TFC – is maybe one of the longest played games in online gaming history. TFC was released in April of 1999, which was over over 10 years ago, and the game still has a loyal fan base.  Even though the player base has shrunk over the past decade, TFC still has a loyal following.

Besides TFC, some of the games that have reached the 10 year mark are – Quake, Quakeworld, Duke Nukem, Counter-Strike, Half-Life 1 and Doom.  But very few people consider Team Fortress Classic to be in the same class as any of those games.  Those types of people usually have never played TFC.  If they had played it, they would understand “why” TFC has a fan base that spans a whole decade.

Thanks goes to jjb273 for posting this video on youtube.

People that have never played Team Fortress Classic, they may not understand what the video is about. But for those of us that have played it, the video is moving and brings forth certain emotions. The time of TFC is passing away. With the release of Fortress Forever and Team Fortress 2, players have moved on.

But for some people, TFC is like an old friend that we have fond memories with.  Its like a high school or college buddy that we think of from time to time.  There is no way to really understand, unless you have been there.

Long live Team Fortress Classic.
